How Spinergie’s fuel consumption analytics identified efficiency improvement opportunities for an OSV manager

Spinergie’s Smart Fleet Management solution provides live fuel consumption KPIs, uncovering opportunities for improvement and measuring progress over time.

Context

Spinergie’s client, a large offshore supply vessel (OSV) manager, sought a solution that would transform fuel consumption data into actionable insight with the ultimate goal of reducing emissions and fuel spending.

Challenge

The client was faced with the challenge of having their fuel consumption data siloed away from other relevant contextual information. While the client was already in possession of granular fuel consumption data, they needed a solution that would enable them to use it to their advantage. They needed to identify opportunities for fuel efficiency improvements from the data gathered, and to do this, the vessel manager needed to understand the behaviours and operational context that was driving consumption patterns.

The vessel manager needed Spinergie to integrate data sources across the client’s business systems, along with third-party data sources, before these insights could be unlocked. With this foundation, an interactive analytics layer was applied to give the vessel manager complete visibility into their fuel consumption. This additional interactive analytics layer adapted to the client’s operations and calculated a fuel consumption insight per vessel activity mode enabling them to identify improvement opportunities and track progress over time.

Spinergie’s fuel consumption insights

Spinergie has integrated fuel consumption data with operational data including vessel positioning, captain’s logs, ROB data, weather stations, crewing and chartering to allow for complete consideration of efficiency drivers. This has allowed for the development of KPIs which allow vessel managers to benchmark vessels within their fleet to uncover savings.

       1. Benchmark fuel consumption across various criteria. The vessel manager was able to evaluate similar vessels of the same class within their own fleet and analyze a like-for-like comparison of their fuel consumption. They were also able to benchmark using additional criteria such as regions, projects, charters and crews to see a fuller picture of why one vessel may be outperforming another.

    2. Evaluate solutions to reduce fuel consumption. Each activity, whether in transit, utilizing DP, or ashore, has different solutions that can reduce fuel consumption. By calculating the fuel consumption per activity, the client is able to estimate the impact of each solution and track results once it has been implemented. This gives the vessel manager a fuller understanding of what works and what can be improved.

Analyzing each component of fuel consumption with multiple data points each day enables comparison across the fleet, ensures fuel reduction targets are being met, enables verifiable ESG reports and allows detailed progress which is tracked over time.

Spinergie’s complete approach identifies inefficient behaviours and patterns. For example, it is possible to receive alerts for vessels running too many engines while waiting stationary offshore and for over-speeding. Additional possibilities include setting up optimal liquid tank loading to reduce drag on the consumption rate while in transit.

Spinergie’s solution helps to identify where these improvements, and more, can be made while continual improvement is achieved through ongoing progress reports.

Result

The client was able to establish KPIs to analyze fuel consumption by selected data points across the fleet. This highlighted problems within the fleet as well as for specific vessels. Using these indicators the client could put together an improvement plan. A key example is the client’s discovery of a threshold where vessel speed exacerbated fuel consumption. As a solution, they were able to implement a clear speed limit to stop this threshold from being breached.

Utilizing fuel consumption KPIs alongside operational activities means that overall non-productive time can be reduced, operations will become more efficient and the client will reduce their fuel consumption.
