What is the difference between Heavy O&M and Light O&M?

Jackup intervention, also known as Heavy O&M, is the replacement or repair of major offshore wind components. Due to the “heavy duty” nature of the components involved - gearboxes, main bearings, generators, and blades - jackup lift capability is required to handle them safely.

This differs from Light O&M which is undertaken using Service Operation Vessels (SOVs), Crew Transfer Vessels (CTVs), and helicopters. These operations are geared around technician access to the offshore turbine, and minor upkeep and maintenance will be undertaken on site.

Which components drive jackup interventions? 

There are four main offshore wind turbine components that require Heavy O&M should they need to be repaired or replaced.

  • Gearbox: The gearbox transforms the slow speed of blade rotations to the faster rotations that can power the electric generator. Gearbox failures are frequent, and affect nearly 50% of geared turbines over a 20 year life cycle. 
  • Main Bearing: The main bearing supports and guides the rotational movement of the turbine. It experiences significant stress which makes it prone to fatigue and wear, therefore, replacements are common. 
  • Generator: The generator converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. There are several common issues that impact it such as insulation failure, overheating, and electrical imbalances. Generator replacements are critical and the offshore operations involved in their repair or replacement can be complex.
  • Blades: Heavy O&M for offshore wind turbine blades is less frequent. When these operations are required it is usually due to leading edge erosion, surface cracking from LTS, or lightning damage.
